Tuesday’s Tip: Sharpening Punches

26 Jun

If you’re like me, punches are a favorite tool.  Anymore, I want all my stamps to have coordinating punches.  Unfortunately, lots of use can eventually dull your punch.  You’ll know it’s dull when punched out edges are no longer smooth.  But of course, there’s a fix and it is most likely in your kitchen!  To sharpen a punch all you need is tin foil.  Here’s what you do…

1.  Fold the foil so that you have multiple layers and punch away.
2.  For best results, after you have you punch sharpened, you can do the same with waxed paper just to smooth things out.  This step is not a must, but many feel it gives the best results.

There you have it, a very simple, inexpensive fix to a very common problem!

Wedding Favors

25 Jun

I was asked to create a wedding favor for an elegant wedding not long ago.  Below are the 2 designs I gave her to choose from.  I’m so thankful for the Big Shot!  It totally made creating these a snap!  In both of the projects I incorporated a flower that was created from layers of scallops punched from the scallop punch.  In order to make these, you just need 4-scallops that have been crinkled by wadding them up in your hand and something such as a brad to fasten them in the center.

What I like about this favor is that it can hang on the back of the guest’s chair.

These were designed so that the flower would slip up the ribbon to open.

Finally, I added velcro to keep the top closed.  As this was a prototype I used the only velcro I had….black.  I highly recommend using white for these colors, however.

Well, as I said, I offered the bride a choice and she chose the design below.  This one sits on the table and was created with the Fancy Favor Big Shot die.  It was super simple to make!

There you have it!

Products Used:

  • Colors:  Pink Pirouette, Wild Wasabi
  • Dies:  Petal Cone Bigz #121810
    Fancy Favor Bigz XL #115965
    Vintage Wallpaper Embossing Folder #120175
  • Ribbon:  Whisper White Organza #114319

Premiere Party Wrap-Up

20 Jun

This may be a little late in coming, but I wanted to share a little from my catalog premiere party last week.  I tried something new, Auction Bucks,  and you all will have to let me know if you liked it, but I loved watching my retired stamps and accessories travel to new, loving homes!

Getting ready for the event was fun, although cleaning is always a challenge, and because I’m totally side-tracked by all my new catalog toys, something always suffers.  As you can tell by the sign that greeted everyone, it was the flowers that took a back seat this year!

As part of the premiere party, I had many retired stamps and accessories on sale.  This year I tried something new, Auction Bucks.  You all will have to let me know if you liked them, but I know I loved watching my retired stamps and accessories take new journeys to your loving homes!  When everyone arrived, they received the beautiful new catalog and these cute little purses as my gift.  In addition to chocolate, each purse contained between $5 and $20 in Auction Bucks that could be spent on retired merchandise or used later to bid on one of 3 mystery bags.

Here’s a look at the retired stamps I had for sale (or free if they used auction bucks!)  Way too many…can you see why I needed to say a fond farewell?  I had to make room for the new!!!

This year my daughter who is old enough and loves to do it, helped me by making her gooey butter brownies and some scrumptious muffins.  Of course, my guests never eat enough so I was forced to enjoy some left-overs.

And, of course, there  were make-and-takes.  Below is one of my favorites.  It’s using a new stamp set called Hoop La La.  I really love the counted cross-stitched look.  In order to make it look even more real, we ran the stamped image and backing CS through the Big Shot using the Square Lattice Folder.  I’ve included the project tips below in case you want to give it a go!

Colors:  Primrose Petals, Midnight Muse, Whisper White, Gumball Green
Stamp Set:  Hoop La La  #126252, In Stitches Jumbo Wheel #121946
Accessories:  Scallop Square Duo Bigz Die, In Color Dahlias (love these!), Midnight Muse Stitched Satin Ribbon

Project Tips:

  1.  Stamp the hoop twice.  Punch one out with the circle punch.
  2. Marker your image…feel free to use different colors to coordinate with the dahlias and designer paper…then stamp on the punched-out hoop.
  3. Marker and stamp the needle on scrap vanilla and cut out.
  4. Stamp the needle tip on the punched-out hoop.
  5. Run both hoops through the big shot with the embossing folder.
  6. Adhere the top hoop using dimensional.
  7. Wheel the main card using  midnight muse.
  8. Assemble.

So, there you have it….the day in a nutshell!  I’m thrilled to say that approximately $1000 in Auction Bucks were used that day!  So, let me know if you liked it and if you’d like me to continue with my Premiere Party next year!

Tuesday’s Tip: Getting The Most From Your Designer Series Paper

19 Jun

Today’s tip is nothing new, just something I, myself, tend to overlook.  It’s all about getting the most from your Designer Series Paper.  The new Patio Party paper is a perfect example of what you can do with DSP.

Patio Party DSP #126916

Always look for ways to use punches with paper to get a new look.  In this first example, I used the 1-3/4″ punch to cut out the large circles to make  a fun background.

Colors:  Primrose Petals, Baja Breeze
Stamp Set:  Layered Labels #127072
Accessories:  Apothecary Accents Framelits, Baja Breeze Seam Binding, Pearl Basic Jewels

On this next example, I used a strip from the DSP to make an accent for the card.

Colors:  Night of Navy, Summer Starfruit, White
Stamp Sets:  Mixed Bunch, #125537, Itty Bitty Banners, #126257
Accessories:  Bitty Banners Framelits, Fancy Fan Embossing Folder, Blossom Punch, 3/4″ Punch

Finally, if you don’t have a particular stamp, look for a way to use a cute image from your DSP.  In this case, I used the cake.  All it took was a pair of scissors!

Colors:  Baja Breeze, White
Stamp Set:  Itty Bitty Banners, #126257
Accessories:  Bitty Banners Framelits, Designer Frames Folder (Oval), Extra-Large oval Punch

And there you have it.  Do you have some examples you’d like to share?  I’d love to hear about it if you do!
